Metaplanet's Executive Equity Pool Sparks Investor Outcry
The executive stock pool at Japanese Bitcoin treasury firm Metaplanet has become a flashpoint for disgruntled shareholders. The company's 10th Series executive option pool was structured to represent 20 percent of fully diluted shares, with a mechanism that automatically expands the pool each time the company issues new equity to finance additional BTC purchases.
A wave of objections has erupted on social media, with multiple investors demanding that Metaplanet rescind the roughly 273 million extra shares generated by the structural changes. Critics are also pressing the company to adopt greater transparency around future capital-allocation decisions.
David Bailey, CEO of Bitcoin Magazine, pushed back against the criticism, telling audiences that allocating 20 percent of the capitalization table to the management team over a five-year horizon is far from excessive. Many shareholders, however, remain unconvinced and continue to call for a rollback of the dilutive provisions.
In a related Japan-focused development, Citi has announced plans to enable Japanese corporates to execute near-instant international payments over blockchain-based rails, with the service designed to operate outside conventional banking hours.
Southeast Asia's Crypto Funding Surge and Singapore's Lead
Private-market data from Tracxn shows that investment in Southeast Asian crypto firms roughly doubled between 2025 and 2026. The region logged 25 funding rounds totalling $680 million in 2026, a sharp climb from $319 million in the prior period. A notable caveat is that capital is concentrating in fewer hands: the previous year saw 46 rounds, meaning the average deal size has grown substantially.
Singapore has consolidated its position as the dominant crypto hub in Asia. It is home to 2,285 of the 3,957 blockchain companies operating across the region and has captured 82.5 percent of all tracked blockchain equity funding in Asia.
The city-state also welcomed a regulatory milestone for US-based exchange Gemini, which received a full Major Payment Institution (MPI) licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore. The approval completes a transition process that began with an in-principle agreement roughly two years ago. MPI holders are exempt from the transaction-volume ceilings that apply to standard payment institutions, allowing them to offer regulated payment services at scale.
Cameron Winklevoss, Gemini's president and co-founder, noted that the firm has been serving Singaporean clients since 2020. His brother and CEO Tyler Winklevoss characterised the market as a strategic base for reaching both retail and institutional customers across the region.
In a related deal, USDC issuer Circle has agreed to acquire Singapore-based cross-border payments firm Tazapay for $400 million. Tazapay maintains partnerships with more than 60 banks and fintech entities spanning 100 markets.
Enforcement Actions and Regulatory Roadmaps Across Asia
United States authorities have moved decisively against the Xinbi Guarantee scam marketplace and its associated vendor network, seizing more than $52 million in linked crypto assets during a coordinated operation. The Justice Department's Scam Center Strike Force took control of two Xinbi wallets used to collect vendor payments, holding approximately $12 million. Investigators also sought restraints on 47 additional wallets suspected of facilitating money laundering across the Xinbi ecosystem.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control designated Xinbi as a significant transnational criminal organization and separately sanctioned two entities alleged to have provided technological and financial support: SafeW Technology, based in Singapore, and Anwen Technology, based in Cambodia.
In South Korea, the Financial Services Commission unveiled a three-phase roadmap to build the infrastructure needed for tokenized securities, covering stocks, bonds, and funds. Under the plan, tokenized securities will gain legal recognition as digitized forms of securities once an amendment to the Act on Electronic Registration of Stocks and Bonds takes effect on 4 February 2027.
Phase one will grant legal status to tokenized institutional money-market funds, bonds, unlisted equities, and fractional investment securities. Phase two extends tokenization to all publicly offered securities, while phase three targets on-chain payment settlement integrated with stablecoins. The National Assembly Budget Office estimates that won-denominated stablecoins could save Korean merchants between $275 million and $3.8 billion in annual payment-processing costs.
India's Financial Intelligence Unit has issued non-compliance notices to 15 offshore virtual digital-asset service providers, citing alleged anti-money-laundering failures. The agency also requested takedowns of relevant applications and URLs, alleging the firms served Indian customers without adequate controls. India's Finance Ministry is set to appear before a parliamentary panel on 16 September, where the taxation and regulatory framework for virtual digital assets will be the central topic.
In Thailand, Webull Securities completed the $100 million acquisition of Pi Securities, a long-established traditional securities and investment-services firm. Meanwhile, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has proposed a 12-month freeze on new payment-system operator registrations while it conducts what it calls a holistic review of its licensing taxonomy. The draft circular also introduces tighter oversight on payment arrangements involving virtual-asset service providers.
